Chevron Hiring Process

Chevron’s hiring process is said to be one of the most extensive processes when compared to that of other multinational companies. Overall, it takes between 3-4 months to complete before receiving a potential job offer.

Below we will explain in detail what it takes to land a job in this prestigious energy corporation.

Applying

Chevron’s website is your best option when it comes to searching for available jobs within the company. As with many different corporations, you can search for vacancies based on location, discipline, and level of expertise. There is usually a significant number of job opportunities to choose from, each with a detailed description of what the position entails.

Pay special attention to the qualifications, as there are two different categories: required and preferred. As expected, you must meet all the skills listed as ‘required.’ Thus, do not waste your time applying to a job if you cannot meet all the requirements.

When applying for an open position, candidates will be prompted to create an online profile that includes all necessary information, including a resume and cover letter. This allows Chevron to evaluate your skills and qualifications. Once a position has closed, the staffing team will screen all applicants and provide the hiring manager with a list of qualified candidates.

It is important to note that Chevron organises regular hiring events. These events are spread out throughout the year and across the country — allowing you to fast track your application by speaking directly to an HR representative. We suggest you take a look at the event calendar by visiting their career website, as you may need to register before attending.

Interviewing

If you meet all the required qualifications, you will be selected to interview with the hiring team. Depending on the position, you will be invited to one or two interviews. The first one is usually done on the phone and includes essential questions to verify the information submitted on your application. The next interview is a face-to-face meeting conducted by a panel of 3-4 experts.

Here, Chevron uses behavioural interview methods characterized by open-ended questions to assess a candidate’s profile. This is your opportunity to highlight your performance skills, such as problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.

Chevron Sample behavioural questions include:

  • Give us an example of a professional accomplishment and how you manage to achieve it.
  • If you have to work on different projects simultaneously, how do you prioritise?
  • How will you convince a team member or colleague to agree on working on a project they are not interested in doing?

The interview portion of the hiring process may seem like the longest, given that it can take up to a month before you get an answer. Thus, sit tight and be patient!

Chevron Assessment Tests

After the interview, and before you can get a potential job offer, you will need to take several tests to ensure that you are the right candidate for the position. In most cases, the assignments will vary based on your field of work and level of expertise.

Nonetheless, the standard pre-employment test package includes:

  • Numerical Skills – used to evaluate your ability to comprehend and solve problems using tables, graphs, and basic math.
  • Reading Comprehension – assess your capability to interpret and understand necessary scientific reading materials, definitions, and instructions.
  • Personality Test – used to evaluate specific personality traits to determine your communication style and leadership skills. This type of test will also allow the employer to decide if you are the right fit for the company’s culture/team.
  • English Test – generally, you will need to take an English proficiency test if this is not your first language. It is a simple exam that evaluates your effectiveness when communicating orally and in writing.

After completing the usual examinations, you might also be asked to complete several job-specific evaluations, including:

COBRA

COBRA stands for ‘Console Operator Basic Requirements Assessment.’ It is a 4-hour test where the candidate needs to monitor various controls of a simple refinery. It is usually done by simulating possible scenarios that may arise while on the field. The COBRA is a highly technical and extensive examination that evaluates abilities such as selective attention, problem sensitivity, deductive reasoning, response orientation, speed of closure, and more. It is a very realistic job preview for those looking to work within the energy industry,

Mechanical Aptitude Test

Mechanical aptitude tests, or mechanical reasoning tests, are generally administered to candidates interested in technical and engineering positions. It measures your capability to comprehend and apply mechanical concepts and principles to solve problems.

The level of complexity of the test questions depends on the job. Moreover, the test covers areas like acceleration, gravity, friction, pressure, energy transformation, kinetic, levers, pulleys, screws, gears, springs, and more.

Note that these COBRA and Mechanical Aptitude Test, are not the only job-specific examinations conducted by the company. Depending on the post, you may need to take other exams. Therefore, we suggest you research if the position you are interested in requires any other evaluation so that you can be properly prepared.

As you can see, the process is long and requires much preparation. Hence, please do not take it lightly and work on your weaknesses.

As a result, you will have a better chance to land a job at Chevron Corporation.
